The MLG has identified the need to provide integrated health services including management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS to geographically isolated populations in some of the seven ACHAP-partner districts. The isolated populations are in hard-to-reach areas due to physical terrain and or long distances from existing static health service delivery facilities.
Under the HIV/AIDS component, the focus is to provide services for prevention, counseling and testing including post-test services, treatment and care, and creation of awareness in communities through target-tailored messages for identified population segments. In view of the linkage between STIs and HIV/AIDS, special attention will be paid on identification and treatment of clients with STIs. In cases where specialized treatment is required, patients will be referred to hospitals.
In order to successfully provide integrated health services in these very needy ACHAP-partner districts, ACHAP in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government has agreed and procured four comprehensive mobile health clinic vehicles, one each for the four districts. These vehicles are fully equipped to provide the services stated above in addition to routine health care services to populations in remote areas from existing health facilities in Chobe, Ghantsi, Ngamiland and Serowe/Palapye. The MLG will provide the requisite human resources to work in these mobile health clinics, medical supplies and maintenance of the vehicles. The MLG’s contribution sets the basis for ownership and sustainability of this initiative. The mobile health clinic services are provided on a pilot basis with the hope to replicate in other parts of Botswana.
