As part of a 10 day trip to the US the Managing Director of ACHAP attended the Global Health Council Conference in Washington, D.C. between May 31 and June 1st 2007. He was part of a panel during a special session of the conference titled “Why the Private Sector and Public Health Need Each Other in Africa”. Also present at the session were moderator Henry A. McKinnell Jr. PhD, Chairman, Academic Alliance Foundation and retired CEO of Pfizer Inc. and panelists Elizabeth Ashbourne, Coordinator, Managing for Development Results, The World Bank, Leonard Lema, MD, CEO, Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania, and Keith McAdam, MD, Director, Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere University, Uganda.
While in the US Dr Moeti took part in two other panel discussions held by the Earth Institute of Columbia University titled “An AIDS-Free Generation in Botswana By 2016 and the Center for Global Development titled “Public Private Partnerships in HIV/AIDS: Are they working? Lessons from Botswana and the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships.”
Dr Moeti also met with officials from organizations involved in HIV/AIDS such as PEPFAR’s Dr Thomas Kenyon, Principal Deputy Coordinator and Chief Medical Officer, Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator, and Dr. Jacob A. Gayle, Deputy Vice President for the Global HIV/AIDS Initiative at the Ford Foundation among others. Finally Dr Moeti was invited to a panel discussion at Merck’s Headquarters in Whitehouse Station (N.J.) and a dinner hosted by Laurie Garrett of the Council of Foreign Relations.
All activities were aimed at informing and sharing experiences about ACHAP's achievements in the context of public private partnerships.
During his trip in the US, Dr Moeti also attended a meeting with the editorial board of the New Jersey based Star Ledger newspaper and was interviewed by Global Health TV and Voice of America TV.
